Hooray, you read my blog on why you should make customs and you’ve decided to start selling customs! Or, hooray, you’ve decided to make customs a key feature of your business. But, um, how exactly do you even begin to price these things?

Something that I almost never see being talked about is the value of what we do as sex workers and content creators. When we make a custom for someone, we are bringing their personal fantasy to life. This is of value. Not just financial, not just sexual, but emotionally valuable.

Customs are also work. They take time and energy. I write scripts, I set up lighting, I maintain an entire wardrobe of looks and fun costumes. I rehearse, I do multiple takes, I edit (or pay an editor if I am too busy). I maintain an archive of customs so if the fan loses their content through some mishap, I can give it to them again.

That is to say, we are getting paid for more than just the final product. All the time we put into making a custom is time where we are not doing other things like marketing ourselves, chatting with fans, or gasp taking time away from work. The effort that goes into making customs comes at a cost, and that cost should be reflected in your prices.

Considering Content Types

Videos! When I price my video customs, I need to figure out if I can put a camera on a tripod and be done or if I need a cameraman to achieve what the fan wants. If I need a cameraman, that costs me money, so the price is raised.

Audio! I love doing audio content. I can get in my comfiest clothes, curl up in bed, and create a sexy fantasy come to life. But sometimes the fan wants super high quality audio. That means getting out my fancy microphone and editing the file on my computer when I’m done recording. This costs more because it’s more time and more work.

Photos! Very similar to videos, I need to figure out if I can put my phone on a tripod and set the timer or if I need a photographer. A photographer costs money. I also take hundreds of photos so, as I’m sure you’ve also experienced, I have to sit down for an hour or two afterwards to go through them and edit my choices, as well as edit the photos themselves, before the fan gets the final set.

Other Things to Consider

Are you having to buy an outfit or toy specifically for this custom? That should be added to the quote. You should not be paying out of pocket to create a custom.

Are you doing specific hair and make-up? That takes time and is also using up consumable goods that you will have to repurchase. You don’t need to add the cost of make-up to your price, but something to be taken into account when you quote.

Is the clean-up going to be extensive? I’ve had customs that have soaked me in various foods, liquids, and bodypaint. This can be hours of cleaning of both myself, my sheets, my clothes, the floors, and anything that got hit by rogue banana puree.

Is this custom going to be resellable? Meaning, if the fan does agree to let you resell the custom, will anyone buy it? Most custom content, in my experience, is very resellable because people tend to have similar fantasies. But sometimes you get something that just won’t resell because it is so niche or completely off-brand for your type of content.

In my final blog on customs, we’ll be going into the nitty-gritty of pricing and why customs should always be paid in advance. Stay tuned!
